Research & Context
How did I understand the world at the time
behind the collection?
In this phase, I researched the cultural, political, and environmental context surrounding Balenciaga’s Winter 2022 show, designed by Demna Gvasalia. I examined how the collection was presented during Paris Fashion Week and explored its connection to the war in Ukraine, climate change, and themes of forced migration.
I analyzed interviews, runway footage, and critical reviews to understand how the designer’s personal history and global events shaped the narrative of the collection.
Key focus:
Cultural and political influences
Designer intent and personal background
Role of fashion as activism

Runway presentation and atmosphere
I conducted a detailed visual analysis of the collection, focusing on silhouette, material, and styling to interpret how garments functioned as both fashion and symbolic “protection.”
I examined exaggerated proportions, utilitarian outerwear, and distressed styling to understand how the designs reflected survival, displacement, and resilience. I also analyzed staging elements such as the snowstorm set, lighting, and sound to evaluate how the show created an immersive emotional experience.
I referenced historical influences, including the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga and Pierre Cardin, to connect contemporary design choices to past fashion movements.
Concept Development & Interpretation
I synthesized my research and visual analysis to interpret the collection as a commentary on modern crises. I explored how fashion can function beyond aesthetics, acting as a medium for storytelling, protest, and reflection.
The collection was positioned as a narrative of survival—transforming traditional ideas of luxury into expressions of urgency and necessity. Through this process, I developed a deeper understanding of how designers communicate complex ideas through both garments and environment.
My thinking + what it all means
Key focus:
Fashion as storytelling and activism
Emotional and psychological impact
Connection between design and global issues
Final Outcome
The final outcome was a comprehensive collection analysis that evaluated how fashion can operate as both artistic expression and social commentary. The project demonstrates my ability to research, analyze, and translate complex design concepts into a clear and compelling narrative.
Through this work, I developed skills in visual analysis, trend interpretation, and critical thinking, while strengthening my ability to communicate ideas within a fashion context.
